Hotspots in Cleveland, OH
Known as “The Roller Coaster Capital of the World,” Cedar Point makes a great destination for the whole family, located less than hour away from downtown Cleveland. The endless amount of activities let you fill a day or an entire weekend. Thrill rides provide a heart-pounding experience for older members of your family, while kids’ rides allow children and toddlers to have fun, too. The accompanying water park can keep your entire crew entertained for a day.
If you’re looking for something vintage, you’ll find it at Chelsea’s. This place is as big as a warehouse and it’s jam packed with vintage stuff in great condition. At first, the piles of clothes are overwhelming. Look closely though, and you’ll begin to notice a pattern. The store is actually meticulously organized by decade, fabric, color and style. If you still can’t find what you want, just ask an employee. They seem to have the entire store memorized. Aside from your average vintage gear, Chelsea’s also deals in costumes. Since most of what they have is top of the line, it’s fortunate that they rent. Most costumes only get worn once or twice, so this shop saves you money by renting at a low price.
Spend a day in the wild without leaving Cleveland. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and RainForest includes over 3,000 animals within 165 acres. Bring your walking shoes, because much of the area is composed of hills. For a unique treat, stop by the two-story RainForest, an exhibit stuffed full of animals and plants from across the globe. Pack a picnic and make a day of it – the zoo does permit the use of coolers and backpacks.
The Kan Zaman, a Mediterranean restaurant in downtown Cleveland, is a lively place to be any night of the week with great food, live entertainment, and belly dancers. They’re throwing in a new activity for Valentine’s Day this year. Bring your sweetie and learn to Tango with the Neo Tango group, professional Tango instructors throwing a special event on Feb. 14. Each lady will receive a rose, while both men and women get a free perfume or cologne. Dessert is free and wine will be discounted for those who choose to dance. Tango is a dance for lovers, so throw on your dancing shoes and get close to each other as you learn a new way to tear up the dance floor.
The Rockefeller Park Greenhouse is the perfect place to take your Valentine for a romantic stroll. The facility, which serves as a greenhouse for the City of Cleveland, also offers several specialty gardens, both inside and outside, open for viewing year-round. Roam the grounds and take in nature’s beauty inside the quiet greenhouse – the building is not usually crowded, especially in the winter months. Admission and parking are free, making this a great way to spend the day without impacting your wallet. Want to liven up the trip? Bring your camera and have your own photo session while you’re there. The beautiful blooms serve as the perfect background.

Step back to the 1920s as you enter the Velvet Tango Room, a swinging piece of Cleveland’s nightlife. At this posh bar, cocktails are still a work of art, all the ingredients are top shelf and manners are required. The drink list is kept in a leather-bound book and trendy, silly sounding drinks are not encouraged. The building itself is hard to spot – it’s in an unlikely part of the city and the building is not marked. The bar’s owner, who isn’t quick to offer his name, shows himself regularly on nights he’s there and presents every lady in the building with a rose. Look your best if you want to get in – no jeans, shorts or T-shirts are allowed and men must remove their hats. Call ahead for your reservation on the weekends.
Ten miles outside of Cleveland, Alpine Valley Ski Resort takes your average ski lodge to a new level. This resort is covered in snow all winter, no matter how much of it Old Man Winter brings. The park manufactures snow each day as long as the temperature is less than 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Not only do they offer downhill skiing and snowboarding on open slopes and wooded trails, but they throw in a twist -- visit the Xtreme park, if you dare! The Xtreme park offers Ohio’s largest half pipe, a rail trail and a separate lift for snow boarders. If you’re not too sure on your feet, get started at the Learning Center. If crowds aren’t your thing, avoid weekends and winter breaks, when the facility is usually filled to the brim.
This Roman-inspired bar and eatery features beers and wines from around the world. Located in Ohio City, just outside of downtown Cleveland, they’re right where all the action is happening. While dog owners are granted access to the outside patio, four-legged friends aren’t banished to the outside at this establishment. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome inside at the bar area at Bar Cento. This bar is ready to party whenever you are – they’re open 365 days a year and serve food until 2 a.m. every day. Happy hour is every day from 4:30-7 p.m.
