Alpine Bakery

Locals know Alpine Bakery as a favorite for New York style pizza and calzones, but dessert is still at the heart of this restaurant and is not to be missed. Display cases full of Alpine’s signature cakes greet you at the entrance – everything from a rich cassata cake filled with cannoli cream to a tall, white coconut cake covered with fresh whipped cream and coconut. Order the Million Dollar Cake for your next party and surprise guests with the layers of flourless chocolate cake, NY cheesecake and chocolate mousse. For the more casual dessert-fan, Alpine serves up freshly-piped cannoli and sfogliatelli, and the lobster tail pastries are as big as your hand. If you are just craving a small sweet bite, the tiny pignoli and linzer cookies or any of the other buttery selections will fit your bill.

If you are craving some sugar while driving through Atlanta’s Midtown neighborhood, look no further than Bakeshop. In keeping with a true European bakery feel, Bakeshop bakes in batches throughout the day to keep their baked goods fresh and warm and to keep their shop smelling sweet. For the croissant fan, try their almond or chocolate almond versions. You also can’t go wrong with the pecan apricot white chocolate scone, or any one of their tiny mason-jars filled with shortcakes and berries. Treat yourself to a slice of key lime pie topped with burnt marshmallow, or order a whole pie for your next event. If you can’t make it to Bakeshop before they close, you can also enjoy their sweets at a large number of local Midtown Atlanta restaurants.

Highland Bakery

With a few locations scattered around the metro Atlanta area, Highland Bakery offers sweet treats for your tastebuds throughout the day. Known by locals for their bite-sized cupcakes with surprise pockets of chocolate or other fillings, Highland offers oversized cupcakes, cookies, dessert bars and other sugar-filled perks perfect for an afternoon treat. If you love peanut butter, don’t miss Highland’s peanut butter and chocolate bars, big enough to share with a friend or save for another day.  Heading to a dinner party? Stop by and pick up a mini cake, just the right size for an intimate group.  If you just can’t make up your mind of what to have, you can’t go wrong with a large, soft chocolate chip-pecan cookie.

Sublime Doughnuts

Doughnut shops are back in style, and Sublime Doughnuts in Midtown, Atlanta knows how to serve them up hot and fresh. Whether your favorite is cream-filled or glazed, you can find them at Sublime. Favorites from locals include the Nutella, the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and the Smores varieties. Others enjoy the more classic A-town Mocha or a frosted croissant. For birthdays, Sublime can put together a 13-doughnut assortment that spells out “Happy Birthday;” just give them 24 hours advance notice for your order. Follow Sublime on Twitter and Facebook to be the first to hear about limited edition daily specials like the maple bacon cheddar doughnut or “Elvis Style” chocolate banana fritters with peanut butter cream.

Flip Burger Boutique

There’s nothing like a creamy milkshake to accompany a burger and fries, and Flip Burger Boutique does all of the above in high-class style. To accompany their famous burgers, Flip has crafted custom milkshakes that go far beyond a basic vanilla or chocolate flavor. To reminisce about summer camp and cookouts, try the Nutella and burnt marshmallow shake. If you crave some glazed flavor, the Krispy Kreme shake has real pieces of those famous doughnuts mixed right in. The apple shake is a throwback to home cooking, while the Cap N’ Crunch and peanut butter foam shake will take you back to your childhood. The shakes are rich and filling, so plan to share with a friend or order a lighter meal to go along with yours.
