In a city with a number of impressive parks, Chatfield may be one of the best for families. Marked by a large reservoir, you'll find it off the c-470 loop, just minutes from Denver. There are endless opportunities for hiking, boating, camping, fishing, hot air balloon rides and bird watching. Chatfield Stables is smack dab in the middle of the park and offers trail rides, pony rides, horse camp and hay rides (they'll even cater one for you!). Every level of rider is welcomed.
Take a quick trip up I-70 from Denver to Evergreen and you'll stumble upon a breathtaking lake snuggled into this cozy, mountain town. The lake offers outdoor activities all year long that range from boating, fishing, wildlife observation and picnicking. Explore Colorado's frontier past at Four Mile Historic Park. Just four miles outside of downtown Denver this 12 acre park houses the city's oldest standing structure, pioneer exhibits, gold panning area and small farm. A former stage stop along the Cherokee Trail in the 1800s, Four Mile Park harkens back to a simpler time when life was just a little bit slower. The Park hosts themed events, like the Festival of Lights and Colorado Christmas, throughout the year.
Whether you are an experienced outdoor enthusiast or relatively new to exploring nature, Golden Gate Canyon State park may be the perfect fit. Just 30 miles outside of the city near Golden, this 12,000 acre park is the perfect "first" camping spot for kids and adults alike. Accommodations include cabin rentals, a ranch house and two campgrounds with electrical hookups, restrooms and a shower house. Fish at the stocked lake, hike or bike the numerous trails or enjoy some cross-country skiing.
