Exercise in Jacksonville, FL
Crave a little variety in your exercise routine? Hop on a bicycle and join the North Florida Bicycle Club on any of multiple weekly rides through the Jacksonville area’s neighborhoods. You might catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in the waters on a beach ride one day, then horses grazing on a ride through Jacksonville’s rural Westside on another. Off-road rides that follow trails winding through one of Jacksonville’s nature preserves promise a workout that might leave you tired, but never bored. Club members can track their mileage and progress online. And you’ll make friends on rides and at the club’s social gatherings.
Early riser? Glutton for punishment? Then the Jacksonville Adventure Boot Camp for Women might be just your thing. This four-week outdoor fitness instruction and motivational training program meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5:30am and kicks your butt for a solid hour. Led by Joseph Beaugh, a certified trainer and registered physical therapist, workouts feature core conditioning, short distance (less than a mile) running, strength and circuit training, jumping rope, hiking, sport yoga, fitness kick boxing, Pilates, sport drills and obstacle courses. Sound intimidating? Don’t worry. This camp is suitable for women of all fitness levels. Make no mistake – you’ll be challenged, but you won’t be left behind.
Get a great workout, some self defense know-how and a whole lot of confidence at Smiley’s Combat Athletix. Billed as a martial arts fitness and education facility, Combat Athletix teaches Mixed Martial Arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing, Kenpo karate, cardio kickboxing, wrestling, MMA and combat core conditioning, and even a little yoga. Sparring isn’t mandatory, but if you’re feeling nervy, they’ll arrange a sparring session if you’re a striking class student. Work up some real brass and join the club’s competitive fight team. In any case, you’ll end up a lean, mean, head-turning machine.
Kiteboarding is just one of the water sports that appeal to water-loving locals. And as an exercise option, it’s no joke. Getting good at it demands a strong arms, superior core stability and powerful legs. You’ll get them with lessons from KGB Kiteboarding. Jacksonville Beach and Hugenot Memorial Park are prime locales for lessons. But individual and group lessons can be arranged anywhere in North Florida, Central Florida or Georgia. Get your best girlfriends together and plan a one-day, two-day or three-day training session. You’ll be jumping 10-foot airs in no time. And your body will love you for it.
If you’re bored to death with the big-box gym scene, get your fitness grove back with a Zumba class at Studio Jear. Invented impromptu-style sometime during the 1990s when dancer and choreographer Alberto Perez forgot the music for an aerobics class he was teaching and grabbed what he could find in his car, Zumba kicked off a worldwide craze that’s still popular today. Forget crunches and sit-ups. Zumba gives you a full body workout via hip-hop, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo dance moves with a little martial arts and a splash of belly dance – all set to an infectious Latin music soundtrack. A typical class can burn between 500 and 1,000 calories and involves resistance training, squats and lunges to strengthen and tone while you quite literally dance your tush off.
