Oregon Zoo

Put the Oregon Zoo at the top of your family destinations in Portland! Families who live here or are just in Portland to visit rave about this zoo -- they love that it's clean, you can see the animals easily and even on the most crowded days, it doesn't feel packed with people. Plus, the layout of the Oregon Zoo is fantastic -- we've all been to zoos that are so huge, with what seems like miles in between exhibits -- they've made the Oregon Zoo the perfect size with enough space between exhibits so that it doesn't feel crowded, but you don't lose interest when walking from the bears to the giraffes! Don't miss their summer concert series -- it's a family hot spot!

Sauvie Island

You won't believe it when we say that the serenity of Sauvie Island is only ten-minutes from downtown Portland. Sauvie Island is fairly large, so you can explore with the feeling of being free of the hustle and bustle of the city. For families, there are endless activity possibilities -- bring bikes to explore the flat roads of the island (not great for beginning bikers, however), check out the beaches that surround the island or spend time picking berries at the Sauvie Island farms. Be warned that it's common to see some nude sunbathing on the beaches of Sauvie, so take a peek before settling in with your family! Visit the Sauvie Island website (above) for detailed information about all that the island has to offer.

Wilson Pool

Quite possibly the best summer family activity in Portland is Wilson Pool in the Hillsdale neighborhood. But, this isn't your average outdoor swimming pool -- Wilson has crazy slides, a lazy river for easy floating and lounging in the water, a kiddie area for little swimmers and even a vortex pool! Getting to Wilson early is a must during the summer -- the lounge chairs fill up quickly and they can only let in a certain number of swimmers at a time, so be sure to be in line before they open at noon! Don't forget to bring a lunch so that you can enjoy Wilson Pool all day long!

The Waffle Window

Looking for a super fun spot to eat with your family while having adventures around Portland? The Waffle Window is the place to go! It is literally a window on the side of a building that serves amazing waffle creations, all for less than $5 each. Parents, you'll love the savory gourmet waffles, with toppings such as bacon, brie cheese and roasted peppers. Kids will not believe their eyes with waffles dipped in chocolate and cinnamon sugar or topped with bananas and Nutella (you can get one too, mom and dad!). Keep an eye on their Facebook page for daily updates about special menu offerings and be sure to take home some pre-packaged waffles to enjoy later, like after the kids go to bed!
