Free Activities in Portland, OR
We all love Portland's Pearl District, so when you add a free festival celebrating art in this charming downtown area, we're bursting with excitement! Art in the Pearl is held every Labor Day weekend and features a variety of art, theater, music and hands-on presentations to explore and enjoy. There will also be food vendors at the event, but feel free to make this an entirely free venture by bringing a picnic from home -- some gourmet cheeses, a fresh baguette and something bubbly to drink would be a perfect match to an evening strolling around the Pearl. Parking is tight -- take public transportation in, if you can!
Did you know that Portland has the most breweries per capita in the entire nation? Portland is so serious about its beer that they have an entire district downtown dedicated to brewing. Great for a rainy Portland weekend afternoon, brewery tours are free at many locations and a fun way to learn more about beer with a group of friends. Breweries that give free tours include Rogue, Widmer Brothers and Hair of the Dog. You can also take the drive out to Hood River to tour Full Sail Brewing or visit their location in Portland. Although most brewery tours accept walk-ins, it's courtesy to let them know you're coming in advance.
Free music in the summertime? Yes, please! Portland has the most amazing summer program called Summer Free for All, which offers activities to people in Portland in their own neighborhoods. Concert in the Park is one of the best -- they bring great live music to you all summer long in that park that's just around the corner from your house! Make an entire evening of it -- pack a huge picnic basket full of goodies, a pretty blanket to spread out on the grass and a group of friend and enjoy a some music and neighbors. Concerts occur every day of the week around the city in the months of July and August.
The Portland Parks Department puts on incredible events during the summers under the Summer Free for All program. One of the most popular parts of Summer Free for All is the Movies in the Park where neighborhood parks all over the city host free movie nights! Some movies are geared towards families, while others are better suited for teenagers and adults and most movies have pre-show entertainment that involves the audience and relates to the movie of the night. Movies in the Park begins in late June and runs all the way through September with multiple movies every week. Don't forget a blanket or low folding chair to sit in, lots of snacks and plastic cups for something to quench your thirst (wink, wink, girls!).
Put this on your calendar -- on the fourth Friday of every month, the Portland Art Museum offers free admission from 5-8pm. Make it a cultured beginning to a date night, round up a group of art-minded girl friends or even just go and explore the museum on your own. The Portland Art Museum is a favorite in the region with over 42,000 pieces to view -- there is a lot to look at, but it's manageable in the three-hour free time space. The museum offers other free admission days throughout the year as well -- keep an eye on their Facebook page or Twitter to be alerted!
