If you enjoy being outdoors and immersed in nature, Cabrillo National Monument is a great place to visit and spend an afternoon. The views are beautiful, there are many fun activities and in January and February, you might get lucky and spot whales off the coast. You may bring your pooch to certain areas of Cabrillo National Monument as long as she's on a leash. You can take your dog out to the dirt parking lot at the lower end of the park as well as along the trails to the tide pools. Enjoy the San Diego weather and history with your favorite pal.

Coronado Dog Beach

Always clean and full of friendly dog owners, Coronado dog beach is a great way for your dog to get some exercise and for you to enjoy the beautiful San Diego outdoors. The dog portion of Coronado beach is located at the very west end, near the entrance to the naval base. During busy times, such as summer afternoons, you have to hunt for parking. If you cannot find anything along the main street, drive back into the neighborhoods a bit. The city also provides several posts with doggy waste bags. Coronado dog beach is great, friendly place to take your dog.

Harry Griffin Dog Park

Located in La Mesa, Harry Griffin Dog Park is great for dog owners of all types. The park offers three separate areas – one for large breeds, one for small breeds and one where owners can take any size dog. While the park is mostly dirt and sand with little grass, there are several areas for dog owners to sit in the shade with their pooches play. Note that Griffin Dog Park is not lighted, so it’s best to leave before dark.

If you need to do a little shopping and want to include your best dog friend, stop by Horton Plaza. The multi-level outdoor shopping mall in the heart of downtown San Diego features over 130 stores. Dogs are welcome to walk in the outdoor areas of the mall as long as they are on leashes and well behaved. There are several places to eat at the food court, so you can stop for lunch or dinner without having to worry about your dog. Keep in mind that dogs are not allowed in stores, so take a friend who doesn't mind keeping your pooch company while you do a little shopping.
