Seaport Village

Seaport Village is so much more than a cluster of shops. The 14-acre waterfront facility features four miles of cobblestone pathways surrounded by beautiful ponds and fountains, relaxing landscaping and live musical entertainment. On beautiful sunny days, which are frequent in San Diego, Seaport Village is the perfect picnic destination. Pack a lunch, bring a blanket and spread out to soak up the sun. Kids can run around in the grass, fly a kite or just relax. Bonus: a nice ocean breeze! If you're not up for packing your own lunch, there are several restaurants at Seaport Village and your choices range from seafood to Mexican. On the weekends, many street performers entertain families with their musical instrument, magic or mime shows. Seaport Village is a great place for a fun family outing.

Belmont Park Amusement Park

Belmont Park, located in Mission Beach, features plenty of opportunities for family fun, including amusement park rides, mini-golf and beachfront restaurants. If you're a water family, don't miss the FlowRider and FlowBarrel, wave machines that allow novice, intermediate and advanced surfers to practice and show off their skills. If miniature golf is a favorite family activity, Belmont Park offers glow in the dark mini golf on a pirate-themed black light course. Up for a challenge? Try the mirror maze or laser maze challenge. Grab lunch or dinner at one of several sit-down restaurants or have a quick hot dog. Dessert is always an option at Beach Treats or The Sweet Shoppe.

Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater

The Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater is located in San Diego's historic Balboa Park. The puppet theater is a fun activity for younger kids –- toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy the imagination, laughs and creativity that every puppet show brings. On or around your child’s birthday, arrive a little earlier than usual and notify the ticket agent. Your child will receive a free admission coupon for future use as well as a birthday serenade by a puppet master and the entire audience before the show starts. Check the website because summer and winter hours vary. Additionally, during peak tourist times, arrive early to ensure parking.

The New Children's Museum

The New Children’s Museum is centrally located in downtown San Diego. It features artwork, hands-on activities, classes, camps and more. Your kids will love it, and you're certain to have a good time as well. Because of its downtown location, parking can sometimes be hard to come by, so arrive early and be prepared to walk a bit. Locals, don’t forget that your entire family can enjoy The New Children’s Museum free the second Sunday of each month! On free admission days, the museum hosts additional performances and special activities. Several preferred family friendly restaurants in the area will accept your New Children's Museum admission ticket for a discount. Check the website for participating eateries.

Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium features exciting exhibits, kelp feeding shows, shark reefs and more. One great aspect of the Birch Aquarium that many visitors like is the size -- it’s small! Not too small so as to limit your experience, but it’s not overwhelmingly large, either. The Birch Aquarium is great for tots and tweens alike, and locals will enjoy reasonable annual pass rates that can be purchased at a discount for the whole family. Bonus: Four free guest passes. Moms, if you’re having a tired day, you can grab a cup of coffee along with lunch for your kids at the outdoor café.
