Harbor Park

There is nothing more quintessential summer than a night at the ballpark. Whether you’re there for the hot dogs, the beers, or even the actual baseball, Harbor Park touts itself as one of the best stadiums in the country. Harbor Park is home to the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Even if baseball is not your thing, a night at the Park should still be on your agenda. The stadium itself sits on the Elizabeth River offering patrons awesome views. Plus there is a Party Deck in the outfield where you can eat, drink, and be social! So head out to the ballpark, kick up your feet, and enjoy the night.

Chick's Beach

The Virginia Beach oceanfront is home to miles and miles of beaches, but unfortunately those miles often become over-crowded come the summer. To avoid the tourists, then, locals flock to the beaches off the Chesapeake Bay, affectionately referred to as Chick’s Beach. Aside from the smaller crowds and a much more local vibe, Chick’s Beach also offers the advantage of calmer and warmer waters than the ocean beaches. Even though the crowds are smaller, a typical summer day will generally still drive people out in droves, and parking along Chick’s Beach can present a problem, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled along the neighborhood roads. Drinking on public beaches is not generally allowed, but no one will bother you here if you keep your beverage in a cup.

Virginia Beach Boardwalk

The Boardwalk is Virginia Beach’s prime attraction and the perfect location for some strolling, lounging, or even people watching.  Restaurants, activities, shops, and sights line the three-mile stretch. At the south end of the Boardwalk, you can take a stroll through the Virginia Legends Walk, which includes famous Virginians such as Thomas Jefferson and Ella Fitzgerald.  As you continue northward, you will hit the Fishing Pier. There is a fee to enter the pier ($1.75 to walk, $7.50 to fish), but no fishing license is required if you want to try to drop your own line and catch yourself an authentic dinner! As you continue up the boardwalk, be sure to explore the Old Coast Guard Station (24th street), small amusement park(15th street), and all the maritime statues, especially King Neptune’s at 31st street. Bike rentals are available all along the stretch, offering a great way to take it all in.

First Landing State Park

Offering easy access to the Chesapeake Bay and its fine beaches, camping, and 20 miles of biking and hiking trails, First Landing is Virginia’s most visited state park. You can choose different options to utilize all the park has to offer—a day trip will set you back $5 for a parking pass, or you can stay overnight in a tent, or even for an entire week in one of the rentable cabins (prices vary by season and type, so check the park’s website for more details).  Visitors rave about the clean bathrooms, easy beach access, and the varied trails. If you're looking to visit the Virginia Beach area but want to avoid the tourist scene, or if you’re looking for a more active pursuit while here, First Landing is the place for you.

Rudee Inlet Jet Ski

As the summer days get hotter and hotter, a day at the beach often turns into a day spent in the water trying to stay cool. But if you’re looking for a little action to fill those days, the folks at  Rudee Inlet Jet Ski should be able to meet your needs. 1, 2, and 3 person jet skis are available to rent as are larger sport boats that can accommodate up to 6 people on board.  The skis and boats can be taken out into the Atlantic Ocean where you can catch the waves and take in the coast.  For a little tamer experience, kayak rentals are also available that allow you to explore the beauty that is Rudee’s Inlet.  Or if you want to get in on one of the latest trends, stand-up paddleboards are available for rent.
