Washington Navy Yard

Enjoy touring the museum that gives the history of the Navy and the role the Navy has played in wars throughout the history of our country. After you have made your way through the museum, take a tour through the USS Barry, an actual retired Navy ship. The kids will get to see what life is like at sea. The Navy Yard is a functioning military base and requires certain clearance before you can enter; call at least 24 hours in advance if you are not military so that you can acquire a visitors badge and a parking pass. If you are around during the month of October, try to catch the Seafaring Celebration where you can enjoy demos, workshops and music.

George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate

This attraction is one of the few in the nation that is open every day of the year. Visit the home where George and Martha Washington shared their lives together, and their final resting place. Tour the mansion, barn, greenhouses and slave quarters all while talking to characters who tell the story of life in the mansion during the 18th century. One highlight for the kids will be touring the areas where National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets was filmed. On a nice day, try parking along the George Washington Parkway and walk to the mansion.

National Museum of Natural History

Your family will love stepping into the museum that came to life in the popular Night at the Museum movies. Your kids will get to see the T. Rex, Big Bob and the Hope Diamond. To see Big Bob, get a timed ticket upon entry into the museum so you and your kids can enjoy the giant tarantula. Be sure to visit the butterfly room, the human evolution exhibit, and the IMAX film during your visit. The museum is best enjoyed by school age kids who can apply the exhibits to what they are learning in school.

Omni Shoreham Hotel

Enjoy staying in luxury while not worrying if the kids are having a good time. Not only are you within walking distance of one of the best zoos in the world, but your kids will receive a mini suitcase loaded with games and books that will keep them entertained while you are free to relax. Take advantage of the location and walk to the zoo and take the Metro or a taxi to the Mall.

Six Flags America

Everyone in the family will enjoy seeing their favorite Looney Tunes characters like Taz and Bugs Bunny. They will also be able to choose from the water rides in the water park, roller coasters, and, of course, the kiddie rides. For the thrill seekers, there is the Superman roller coaster, featuring a 200 foot plunge, and for the little ones, Thomas Town allows them to take a ride around Sodor and pose for pictures with their favorite engines. To avoid large crowds, the best days to visit are weekdays during the summer months and during the months of April, May, September and October.
