University of Maryland, College Park

Grab a blanket and some lawn chairs and head over to the University of Maryland at College Park to enjoy some good old fashioned fireworks. You can either picnic and bring along a cooler or picninc basket full of food or bring along a few dollars and buy some of the concessions that they will have on hand. There is something warming and nostalgic about sitting in the grass watching the sky light up while eating a hot dog! Traffic starts to build up around 7:30 so try to get there early to be sure you get a spot in Lot 1, the other lots are open with free parking but there is no shuttle so you wil have to walk.

Alexandria's Birthday Celebration

Help celebrate the nation's birthday as well as Alexandria's birthday. Enjoy watching the show in this historic town, the event is full of games, music, and activities for the kids to enjoy. The whole family will love the birthday events and watching the people dressed in costume, you will feel like you are in old world Alexandria. The access to the waterfront event held at Oronoco Bay Park is closed at the Union Stree entrance so it will be about a 10 minute walk from where you have to park. Enjoy performances by an Army band and the food and refreshments for sale.

Fort Meade

There is something special about watching fireworks from an actual army base, watching it surrounded by people who are part of the reason we are still celebrating freedom! Open to the public this event features music, games for the kids, and demonstrations. The event starts at noon and provides a fun day for the whole family and a nice way for the little ones who won't make it to the fireworks to still take part in the festivities. It gets crowded around 7:30 in anticipation for the nightime show so try to get there a little early and enjoy some of the other festivities.

Gaithersburg Independence Day Celebration

Enjoy this two hour concert followed by the fireworks display. No alcohol prohibited by a nice cold glass of lemonade or cola to cool off after a hot Maryland summer day with some relaxing music is the perfect way to celebrate the 4th! Held at the fairgrounds there is plenty of space and you won't feel like it is overcrowded, take note that the Perry Parkway entrance will be closed and that might increase traffic to some of the other entrances. The event starts at 5pm and the fireworks are at dusk.

Gaylord National

Set against the backdrop of the Potomac River watch fireworks in style! Either from the gorgeous Gaylord National Hotel or from the river deck where events are frequently held. Right on the river there is often a cool refreshing breeze to keep it from getting too hot here. There is a live concert in the outdoor amphitheater overlooking the dock and there is a mini carnival for the kids to enjoy. There are carnival rides and games for the kids and wine and cigars for the kids. The best part is that after you watch the fireworks show over the Potomac River you can get a room for the night and not have to worry about driving home!
