Shatila Bakery

Pastry lovers will think they’ve died and gone to heaven after stepping into this palm tree-filled oasis. Specializing in Middle Eastern delicacies and French pastries, Shatila showcases the diversity of desserts available in the Detroit area. Each day, the bakers at Shatila labor just as artisans did thousands of years ago, creating tissue-thin pastry covered in butter, enfolded with fresh nuts and drizzled with sugary sweet syrup. Each treat is all natural and made without preservatives. In addition to pastry goodness, customers can also enjoy creamy homemade ice cream, available in a variety of unique flavors including kashta, cantaloupe and apricot.

Good Girls Go To Paris Crepes

After spending time in Paris, owner Torya Blanchard made it her mission to bring a bit of French flair back to the D. After receiving a wave of success upon opening in 2008, the Good Girls menu now features 50 varieties of sweet and savory crepes, all made-to-order. Customers can watch in wonder as each paper-thin pancake is made by hand and filled with fresh berries purchased from Detroit’s Eastern Market. Forget the hassle of flying – taste a bit of Paris right in the heart of Detroit’s Midtown, with a second location in Grosse Pointe Park coming soon. Bon appétit!

Achatz Handmade Pie Co.

With eight metro Detroit locations, Achatz has become the place for pies since 1993. Tender, flaky crust and real fruit fillings merge with locally grown ingredients to create a fresh-from-the-oven pie that's 100 percent natural. Even with more than 30 flavors available – ranging from Michigan 4-Berry to a luscious French Silk – things are still done the old fashioned way with many of the recipes being passed down through the generations. Cream pies are made from scratch using pure butter, pure vanilla and fresh local whole milk. And if you can't indulge in sugar, there are also fruit juice sweetened pies available. Stop by for a taste even grandma would be proud of.

Customers can choose from more than 50 flavors of gourmet jumbo cupcakes and mini cupcakes, with creative confections ranging from the popular “Big Oink” (yes, bacon is involved), the “Fat Elvis” (banana, peanut butter and ganache) and the top-selling “Grumpy Cake” – homage to a nostalgic Detroit bakery’s “Bumpy Cake” recipe. But buyer beware – it’s hard to resist just one.
