Snow Days

It doesn’t have to be baseball season for Indians fans to have fun at Progressive Field.Snow Days, an annual event that turns the much loved baseball field into a winter wonderland, is a popular stop during the holiday season.Walk through Winter Haven, a beautiful outdoor light display, ice skate around the Frozen Mile or snow tube down the Batterhorn, a 60-foot high slide of ice that begins at the top of the bleachers. When you get too cold, warm up in the heated Indians’ dugout or the children’s play area inside. Ice skating and snow tubing does cost extra, so families of four who plan to partake in all the activities would benefit from purchasing a family pack.

A Christmas Story House and Museum

It’s Christmas all year long at A Christmas Story House and Museum. The Cleveland home that served as the setting for the famous Christmas flick is now recently restored and open for tours. Walk through Ralphie’s former home and see it as it was with original props from the movie, including the popular leg lamp. To make your visit even more special, watch the movie before you go. It’ll make the set seem even more familiar. After you’ve been through the house, visit the official museum across the street. Do some holiday shopping while you’re there – the museum gift shop is the world’s best seller of leg lamps.

Polar Express

Take a night ride Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to see the sights and sounds of the season. The whole family will sit comfortable in their pajamas and snack on hot chocolate and cookies during the Polar Express. Children will listen intently to a reading of the classic story by one of Santa’s elves while en route to a lighted North Pole. If you’re lucky, Santa himself will pay a visit during the ride. Buy your tickets early, as most scheduled departures tend to sell out before the start of the holiday season. If you’re lucky enough to get tickets, make sure you get there early, as well. While cars are assigned, seats are not. Be one of the first to arrive to assure good seats and the chance to sit with your entire group.

Deck the Halls

The historic house museum and country estate is transformed each winter to present Deck the Hall. Your family will be greeted with bright holiday lights as soon as you enter the grounds. The entire estate is decorated to reflect Christmas’ of the past. Get there early to get the whole experience; the night begins with a Christmas tree lighting at 5:30 p.m. every day. If you bring the kids along, be sure to stop by Santa’s workshop and try some hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies. Don’t stop at the main house. Make sure you visit every building on the grounds, because each one has a different holiday treat in store.

WinterShow

Surround yourself in the beauty of the holiday season at the Cleveland Botanical Garden during WinterShow. Brilliantly decorated Christmas trees, animal topiaries and other holiday plants deck the halls of the entire facility. You’ll see a huge display of gingerbread houses, and may even catch some live music while you’re there. Get a bite to eat at the Garden Café, serving holiday favorites throughout the event. Do some Christmas shopping for any gardeners on your list at the gift shop. Once you’ve seen the sights at the garden, don’t rush away just yet. Take your receipt from the WinterShow across the street to the Wade Oval skating rink and enjoy free ice skating.
